"How much will our packaging cost?" is the first question almost every founder asks, and the honest answer is that it depends on five or six things you can control. This guide explains what drives packaging design cost in India, what you get at each price level, and how to brief an agency so the quote you receive is accurate.

Why packaging design prices vary so much

Two quotes for "a box design" can differ by ten times, and both can be fair. The difference is rarely the hours spent drawing. It is the thinking that comes before the drawing: research into the category, the shelf, the competitor packs and the buyer. A pack designed without that work can look good on a screen and disappear on a crowded shelf.

The six things that set the price

  1. Number of SKUs. A single pack is one project. A range of eight flavours in three sizes is a system, and systems need rules for colour coding, hierarchy and variant naming.
  2. Strategy and research. Category audits, shelf studies and positioning work add cost but sharply reduce the risk of a redesign within two years.
  3. Brand identity. If the brand has no logo or visual language yet, that work comes first and is usually quoted separately.
  4. Structural design. A custom bottle, box shape or opening mechanism needs structural drawings and supplier coordination. Using a standard pouch or carton costs far less.
  5. 3D renders and mockups. Photoreal renders for e-commerce and investor decks are often bundled in, and they save a photoshoot before the first print run.
  6. Print management. Artwork adaptation for each size, colour proofing and press checks protect the final result and are worth paying for.

Typical ranges by type of designer

These are indicative market ranges for India and vary by scope and city.

Who you hire Typical range Best for
Freelancer ₹10,000 to ₹50,000 per pack One-off packs with a clear brief and existing brand
Small studio ₹50,000 to ₹2 lakh per project Small ranges, label refreshes, new D2C launches
Established branding agency ₹2 lakh to ₹10 lakh+ per range Multi-SKU systems, new brands, retail and export ranges

A low quote is not always a saving. A pack that fails on shelf costs far more in lost sales and reprints than the design fee ever did.

How long does packaging design take?

A single label refresh can be done in two to three weeks. A new range with strategy, identity and 3D renders usually takes six to ten weeks. The biggest source of delay is rarely design. It is waiting on content: ingredient lists, FSSAI details, barcodes and net quantity declarations. Have these ready before kick-off.

Costs that sit outside the design fee

Design is only one line in a packaging budget. Plan for these as well, so the launch does not stall halfway:

  • Printing plates or cylinders. Gravure and flexo printing need a new set for every design change, so late edits get expensive.
  • Colour proofs and press checks. A physical proof before the full run catches colour shifts that a screen will never show.
  • Barcodes and regulatory review. GS1 barcodes, FSSAI details and Legal Metrology declarations need to be correct before artwork is final.
  • Translations. Regional language versions need a native-speaker check, not just a translation tool.
  • Product photography or 3D renders. E-commerce listings need clean pack shots, ideally before the stock arrives.
  • Prototypes. Physical samples of a new box or bottle shape are worth every rupee. They reveal problems with opening, stacking and shelf fit.

A good agency will flag these early and help you budget for them, rather than leaving them as surprises after sign-off.

What a strong packaging brief includes

  • Who buys the product and where (modern trade, kirana, quick commerce or D2C)
  • The three competitors you lose sales to
  • Mandatory label content and regulatory details
  • Pack formats, sizes and printing method
  • Budget range and launch date

What the right fee buys you

When Haldiram's set out to launch Krunchers into India's most crowded snack aisle, the pack had to work for metro shoppers and smaller-town buyers at once. You can see how we approached it in the Kruncher case study. That kind of thinking is what separates a product packaging design company from a print shop, and it is where your fee should go.

Frequently asked questions

Is label design cheaper than full packaging design?

Yes. A label on a standard bottle or jar needs no structural work, so it usually costs less than a custom box or bottle.

Do I pay separately for each size?

Most agencies quote the master design once and charge a smaller fee for each size or variant adaptation.

Should I hire a packaging design agency in Delhi or work remotely?

Remote works well for most projects. A local agency helps when you need press checks, physical prototypes or shelf visits.
