Delhi has one of the most competitive restaurant scenes in the country. New places open every week, and diners have more choice than ever. Great food is expected. What makes people remember a place, return and recommend it is the brand: the name, the space, the menu, the details. Here is how strong restaurant brands are built, with lessons from projects we have worked on.

Start with the concept, not the logo

A restaurant brand begins with a clear idea of the experience. Who comes here, when, and how should they feel? Everything else, from the name to the menu paper, follows from that answer.

Omaxe Dawatpur is a good example. It is not just a food court. It was imagined as a contemporary home for Old Delhi's food culture, where every lane and corner tells a story.

Lesson 1: Heritage is an asset, if you handle it with care

Delhi has restaurants with decades of history. Rebranding them is delicate work, because regulars have strong feelings about places they love.

  • United Coffee House has been Delhi's living room since 1942. For UCH Rewind, the brief was to carry the legacy forward, not rewrite it.
  • Mysore Cafe, a South Indian institution since 1979, had faded into the background. The Mysore Cafe rebrand turned it into a redefined classic for a new generation.

The lesson: keep what people love, modernise what holds the brand back.

Lesson 2: Culture can travel, if you translate it

Parsi-Irani cafés are full of nostalgia, personality and ritual, but they are largely unknown outside Mumbai. Taking Batliwala & Co to Dubai meant translating that cultural depth for a new audience without making it feel niche or like a museum piece.

Lesson 3: A strong concept can carry a bold identity

Mestizo blends Mexican, Peruvian and pan-Latin American flavours. The identity and spatial design lean into that mix with energy, rather than playing it safe.

The restaurant branding checklist

Touchpoint What to get right
Name Easy to say, easy to search, and available as a domain and handle
Logo and signage Readable from the street, day and night
Interiors Materials, lighting and graphics that match the brand story
Menu Clear hierarchy, readable in low light, consistent with the identity
Packaging Delivery boxes and bags that travel well and look good on arrival
Digital Delivery app listing, Google profile and Instagram grid that match the space

Naming a restaurant: five tests

The name is the first brand asset a restaurant has, and often the hardest to change later. Before you commit, check that it passes these five tests:

  1. Say it out loud. Can a guest recommend it to a friend over the phone without spelling it?
  2. Search it. Is the name free on Google Maps, Zomato, Swiggy and Instagram in your city?
  3. Check the domain and trademark. Securing both early avoids an expensive rename after launch.
  4. Picture it on the facade. Long names shrink on signage and get lost at night.
  5. Test the story. Can your team explain the name in one sentence? A good story behind a name gets retold by guests.

Do not forget delivery

For many restaurants, a large share of customers never step inside. Their only brand experience is a delivery app listing and the packaging that arrives at their door. Design the delivery experience with the same care as the dining room.

Frequently asked questions

When should a restaurant start branding?

Before the interiors are designed. The brand should shape the space, not be added to it afterwards.

Can a small cafe afford proper branding?

Yes. Start with the essentials: name, logo, signage, menu and packaging. A good cafe branding agency will scale the scope to your budget.

How long does restaurant branding take?

Identity work typically takes six to eight weeks. Spatial design runs alongside the interior fit-out.
