Most whisky bottle design in India follows the same playbook: dark glass, heavy serif type, gold foil, maybe a stag or a crest. It signals "premium" in the same way every other bottle on the shelf does. When Aziz came to us, the brief was to step away from that playbook entirely. This is the story of how the bottle was built.
Starting with a name
"Aziz" means "beloved" in Urdu. That single word changed the direction of the project. Instead of power, heritage and masculinity, the codes most whisky brands borrow, we could build a brand around romance. The story we landed on was one of forbidden love: two royal souls, bound together despite every boundary.
From story to object
A brand story only works on a shelf if it becomes something you can see and touch. Every element of the Aziz bottle carries part of the narrative.
- The emerald glass. We chose a deep emerald bottle that reads like a jewel rather than a container. Under store lighting, it glows where brown and clear bottles go flat.
- The metallic braces. Metal bands hold the bottle like a precious stone held in a setting, a quiet reference to love under constraint.
- The playing card. At the heart of the label sits a card bound by four screws, showing a king with his sword and a queen with her rose, joined by a red heart.
- The crown cap. A crown-shaped closure topped with a diamond makes opening the bottle feel like a ritual.
- The "38" code. An enigmatic number on the neck invites a question, and a question is the start of a conversation at the bar.
Why emotion works in luxury whisky packaging design
In a saturated spirits market, taste alone rarely sets a brand apart, because most buyers cannot compare liquids before they buy. Storytelling can. A bottle that gives people something to talk about gets photographed, gifted and remembered. Aziz was designed to be sophisticated enough for connoisseurs and emotional enough for everyone else.
The label: story and compliance on one small surface
A whisky label in India must carry a statutory warning, alcohol content, net quantity, MRP and bottler details, alongside the brand. On Aziz, the front of the bottle is given almost entirely to the story: the card, the heart and the name. The mandatory text sits on a separate back label, laid out at true size from the start, so nothing had to be squeezed in at the last minute.
This split matters for any luxury whisky packaging design. Buyers judge the front from a distance and turn the bottle only once they are interested. Give each surface one job and both do it better.
How Aziz stands out on shelf
Most premium bottles in an Indian liquor store share the same palette of amber, black and gold. An emerald bottle with metal bracing breaks that pattern immediately. The crown cap adds height and a distinct silhouette, so the bottle is recognisable even when the label is turned away.
Bringing it to life before production
Glass moulds and custom closures are expensive to change once tooling starts. We used 3D product rendering to show the bottle, cap and label from every angle before a single mould was made. It let the team approve proportions, test the emerald tone under different lighting, and produce launch visuals while production was still underway.
What other spirits brands can take from Aziz
- Find the one word. A single meaning, like "beloved", can guide every design decision.
- Break one category code on purpose. Aziz kept the luxury cues but swapped masculinity for romance.
- Make the closure part of the story. Buyers touch the cap before they taste the liquid.
- Leave something unexplained. The "38" works because it is not spelled out.
- Prototype in 3D first. It saves money and gives you launch assets early.

Frequently asked questions
How long does a custom whisky bottle design take?
Identity and label work can be done in weeks, but custom glass and closures add tooling time with the manufacturer, so plan several months for a fully custom bottle.
Is custom glass necessary for a premium whisky?
Not always. A stock bottle with a distinctive closure, label and finish can look premium at a far lower cost. Custom glass is worth it when the shape itself is part of the story.
